Smart Strategies

Offering healthful options for all foods and beverages sold or provided at school can be a significant challenge. To be successful, it is essential to garner support and involve school leaders, school staff, school administration, families, and students. Your hard work can really make a difference, and with guidance from this toolkit, you can help make the healthy choices the easy choices in your school.

Welcome to the Smart Strategies Section! This section of your Smart Choices Toolkit will assist you as your school implements the Boston Public Schools Nutrition Policy and Guidelines for Vending Machines, A la carte and Competitive Foods. It will provide: examples and practical ideas for healthy fundraisers, classroom parties, and school events, introduce sample messaging for students, families, and staff about healthy offerings guided by the new implementation guidelines, a calendar of healthy dates to celebrate, and provide you resources as you move forward with the school year. It will also provide sample messaging for students, families, and staff about the healthy offerings.

What are competitive foods? Competitive Foods are all foods or beverages sold or provided in public schools, other than those items sold or provided as part of federal nutrition programs, like the School Breakfast Program, School Lunch Program, and the Child and Adult Care Program. They can be found in school cafeterias, school stores, school snack bars, concession stands, booster sales, vending machines, fundraising activities, school-sponsored or school-related events, food trucks, and any other location on school property including classrooms as part of parties and reward practices.
Thank you for making a commitment to the health of your school community by offering Smart choices. We appreciate your participation as we work together to actively promote the health and wellness of all Boston Public School students to advance both their healthy development and readiness to learn.
